Learn how to get started with PowerShell, from variables and loops to working with objects, pipelines, and JSON.
PowerShell is often misunderstood as just a standard command prompt, but it is actually a fully-featured, object-oriented scripting language. This hands-on course teaches you how to write structured, reusable PowerShell scripts from the ground up. You will start with core language mechanics, including functions, literal output, variables, and arithmetic, before moving into parameters and interpolated strings. From there, you will control script execution using numeric comparisons, Boolean values, and standard if and else conditions. You will also learn how to manage data collections by working with arrays, indexing, and the Count property, alongside practical exercises in summing and filtering numbers with foreach loops.
The real capability of PowerShell lies in its pipeline, which passes structured data instead of plain text. You will learn how to construct objects with named properties and manipulate them by filtering with Where-Object, sorting and selecting report values, and calculating summaries with Measure-Object. Finally, you will apply these techniques to manage external data and build reusable scripts. You will handle file I/O by saving and reading text, implement early returns for empty input, and convert data between PowerShell objects and JSON. The course culminates in a hands-on capstone project where you will combine these skills to generate a fully filtered JSON report.
